A Healing Story Gathering
~ Pre-Conference concert on the evening of July 8. 2003
~ Workshops and discussion groups during the day on July 9, 2003.
The Healing Story Alliance's 2003 Pre-Conference is an innovative, three-part program designed to enlighten, challenge and empower. Tuesday evening showcases the stories of six tellers, focusing on different aspects of healing through story. On Wednesday, Pre-Conference participants may choose two workshops from the six offered by these tellers, reflecting their specific areas of healing story expertise. Through the afternoon, participants will choose and discuss topics in depth through afternoon learning groups. At the end of the day, the groups will reconvene to share their experiences and insights. This highly successful model is derived from the Popular Education Movement, developed by the late Brazilian educator/activist Paulo Freire.
Workshops will be offered on the following topics: wellness and community, embracing the 'other', healing our stories, mindfulness practices, challenging homophobia, and creating healing story programs.
The tellers/workshop presenters and their topics are:
Allison Cox, Survival Stories: Sharing Vital Tools for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
Bob Kanegis and Liz Mangual: The Man Who Entertained the Bears: Encounters with the 'Other' Through Story
Christopher Maier: Healing Fictions: Re-Visioning Stories of Life Conflicts
Elisa Pearmain: Stories and Mindfulness Techniques in Therapeutic Settings
Rico Rodriguez: Dismantling Homophobia and Healing All, One Story at a Time
Joan Stockbridge: Beginnings, Middles and Ends: Designing a Healing Story Program

Stepping Into Story - Allison Cox
Drawn to telling stories but not sure how to begin? Wonder how to take the written story off the page and bring it to life? Join Allison Cox in exercises that build kinship with story. Learn to inhabit a tale, look through your character's eyes and walk in their shoes as your story comes to life with possibilities. This evolution of tales also includes developing story sense memories, changing description into dialogue; adding cultural markers, poetry and song; and much more! While this workshop is appropriate for beginning tellers, this process will yield surprising insights for all storytellers to add depth to a tale.
