Where We Belong
Stories of Culture Shape Pathways to Healing

Workshop Description:

Allison Cox will share tales of experiences with tried & true tales and the lessons learned from incorporating storytelling into multiple events and projects among immigrant and refugee populations around the Puget Sound. With a focus on reclaiming culture, hear how communities can celebrate diversity while building a sense of belonging and understanding among diverse neighbors. Allison interweaves folktales with personal stories, interactive exercises, and even a group poem.

Who should attend?
Storytellers, teachers, health professionals, clergy, social activists, educators/librarians and any dedicated community member will find ideas and tools at this workshop that can be applied to their story work, whether they are veterans or beginners in telling stories.

This workshop is also co-taught with Joan Stockbridge as:

All Together Now: How storytelling inspires communities to meet challenges and create a healthier future. How to use storytelling with community partners to build social awareness, address community health issues and promote individual and community development. Because stories capture the imagination and open the mind to possibilities, tellers can consciously shape story programs toward healing goals. Allison Cox has partnered with community agencies for 20 years of health promotion/community development and four years compiling The Healing Heart books. She will illustrate steps for fostering community understanding, cooperation and commitment, while encouraging social change toward healthier lifestyles. Joan Stockbridge's experiences in women's shelters, crisis day care and drug rehabilitation programs will be interwoven with folktales and detail how to design helaing story sessions.. Information will encompass working with community partners and finding potential financial support, locating and choosing stories, using process notes, developing goals and activities. Stories of all kinds will be shared for building community, challenging assumptions, transforming and shaping safer neighborhoods. Handouts include resources for ongoing support and bibliographies.
